Are Indian Workplaces Truly Inclusive? Key Lessons on PoSH, Workplace Culture & DEI from the Zee News Podcast

Creating a workplace where people feel safe, respected, and heard is no longer just a good practice. It has become a business priority.

In my recent conversation on the Zee News Podcast, I had the opportunity to discuss workplace culture, the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), women in leadership, and the role leaders play in creating respectful workplaces.

The discussion wasn’t just about legal compliance. It was about the everyday decisions that shape workplace culture.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the conversation.

1. A PoSH Policy Alone Doesn’t Create a Safe Workplace

Many organizations have a PoSH policy because the law requires it.

But having a policy is only the beginning.

Employees should know where to report concerns, trust that they will be heard fairly, and feel confident that complaints will be handled with sensitivity and confidentiality.

A safe workplace is built through consistent actions, not documents alone.

2. Workplace Harassment Often Goes Unreported

One of the biggest concerns discussed during the podcast was the hesitation many employees feel before reporting workplace harassment.

Some fear judgment.

Others worry about retaliation or damage to their careers.

Organizations can reduce these fears by creating transparent reporting processes, training managers, and building trust across teams.

3. PoSH Is About Respect, Not Just Compliance

Many people associate the PoSH Act only with mandatory annual training.

In reality, its purpose is much larger.

PoSH encourages organizations to create workplaces where dignity, respect, and accountability become part of everyday work culture.

When employees understand acceptable workplace behaviour, organizations become healthier and more productive.

4. Leaders Influence Workplace Culture Every Day

Company culture isn’t built only by HR teams.

Managers and leaders shape workplace experiences through their behaviour, communication, and decisions.

Simple actions like listening without judgment, responding fairly, and addressing concerns promptly can strengthen employee confidence and trust.

Leadership behaviour often determines whether employees feel safe speaking up.

5. Diversity & Inclusion Need Everyday Action

Hiring diverse talent is only one part of inclusion.

An inclusive workplace ensures every employee feels respected, valued, and able to contribute without fear of discrimination or bias.

Organizations that invest in inclusive leadership often see stronger collaboration, innovation, and employee retention.

6. Women in Leadership Continue to Face Challenges

The conversation also explored barriers many women continue to experience throughout their careers.

Career breaks, unconscious bias, unequal opportunities, and balancing personal responsibilities remain common realities.

Creating equitable workplaces requires policies, supportive leadership, and equal growth opportunities.

7. Understanding False PoSH Complaints

Another topic discussed was false PoSH complaints.

While such cases can occur, they represent only one part of the conversation.

Organizations should have fair investigation processes that protect the rights of everyone involved while encouraging genuine complainants to come forward without fear.

A trained Internal Committee plays an important role in maintaining fairness and transparency.

Building Better Workplaces Starts with Better Conversations

Workplace culture cannot be improved through compliance alone.

It grows when organizations encourage open communication, educate employees, support managers, and create systems that people trust.

Every workplace has an opportunity to become safer, more respectful, and more inclusive.

That change begins with awareness, followed by consistent action.
